Trails West
Why did people move west?
Manufacturers and merchants followed settlers west because they hoped to earn money by making and selling items that farmers needed. Other people went West to find jobs or to escape from people from whom they owed money. Traders traveled West in search of markets. People traveled to Oregon because they had heard glowing reports of its rich lands. Mormons traveled to Utah which was a desolate place so they would be left to follow their faith in peace.
Main Trails
The three main trails that led west was the Santa Fe Trail, the Oregon Trail, and the Mormon Trail. The Santa Fe Trail starts from Independence, Missouri and stopped at Santa Fe. The Oregon Trail started at Independence, Missouri and ended at the Oregon Territory. The Mormon Trail started at Nauvoo, Illinois and ended at Salt Lake City in the Utah Territory.
Mountain Men and Pioneer Women
Mountain men were fur trappers that roamed the Great Plains and the Far West to set traps and obtain furs. The mountain men's explorations provided Americans with some of the earliest firsthand knowledge of the Far West. This knowledge made it possible for later pioneers to move west. Pioneer women were the people who cooked for their families on their trail west. Some of the pioneer women's supplies were flour, corn meal, baking soda, sugar, crackers, dried beans, rice, dried fruit, bacon, coffee, and vinegar. One of the meals they cooked was Fricasseed Squirrel.
How did Mormons make Utah land productive?
Mormons worked together to build dams and canals. These structures captured water in the hills and carried it to the farms in the valleys bellow. From the Mormons working together, they made their desert homeland bloom.
